Barcelona will face Liverpool in the semi finals of the Champions League after comfortably dispatching Manchester United 4-0 on aggregate over two legs.

A Luke Shaw own goal was enough to give Barcelona a slim advantage at Old Trafford, and then came a Nou Camp masterclass with a Lionel Messi brace and a sublime strike from Philippe Countinho finishing off the tie.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's honeymoon period as boss is well and truly over now and the United faithful will be looking for a productive summer period with at least a couple of world class signings.

Whilst United's focus is now solely on the Premier League, Barcelona have the opportunity to take advantage of Real Madrid's early exit and become the new kings of Europe whilst keeping Spain at the top of club football.

One player who did however have sympathy for one of Man United's players was goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The German watched with empathetic eyes as Lionel Messi's strike harshly squeezed underneath the body of David de Gea, much to the dismay of a United side short of ideas.

A 'keeper can simply not afford to mistake being the last line of defence, and it's typical that after numerous times that De Gea has saved his club with a plethora of unbelievable stops, he makes a crucial mistake in their biggest game of the season.

The 26-year-old refused to celebrate Barca's second goal and admitted that all 'keepers have to go through it at some stage.

"After the game I told De Gea that we are all humans and that this could have happened to me as well," the German shot-stopper told COPE.

"The truth is that it took me a while to celebrate that goal, because he shares the same position as me, and I share his pain."

"But life will continue."

In the grand scheme of things, de Gea's mistake will mean very little but it just shows that the pressure can get to even the very best.
