Deontay Wilder has claimed Luis Ortiz should be Anthony Joshua’s replacement title challenger at Madison Square Garden.

Joshua has been left without an opponent on June 1 after Jarrell Miller was refused a license due to a failed drugs test.

Wilder already has the perfect replacement in mind, though - 31-1 Cuban heavyweight Ortiz.

Wilder told AB boxing news, per The Metro:  “Out of all those guys, Luis Ortiz would be the man who’d be ready. Luis Ortiz always trains.”

Ortiz’s only defeat came at the hands of The Bronze Bomber himself in March 2018, but the KO clearly hasn’t tarnished Wilder’s opinion of him.

Wilder went on to say: “After my fight, he stayed training. He stayed doing something, he stayed waiting on that call.

“People want to talk about his last performance, yeah, yeah, yeah, we all have an off day, we all can’t be perfect, even the best of the best.”

With three belts on the line, and a reported £25 million ($32 million) fight purse for Joshua and £4.6 million ($6 million) for Miller, the new challenger will need to be a worthy opponent.

Ortiz has had three fights since the Wilder loss, most recently beating Christian Hammer by unanimous decision March 2 in New York.

It would be only the second time Ortiz has faced a British fighter, though, after he beat David Allen at the Manchester Arena back in December 2010.

He fits the bill as well, as Eddie Hearn has said they are considering eight fighters with a preference to an American-based fighter.

Joshua’s new challenger will be confirmed in the early part of next week, according to his promoter, and it will be interesting to see if they take Wilder’s advice and give Ortiz another shot at a world title belt.
