Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez will return to Anfield next month as Liverpool and Barcelona clash in the Champions League semi-final.

The La Liga leaders and the Premier League leaders have set up a mouthwatering tie in the last four of the competition, with the winner facing either Ajax or Tottenham in the final.

And the return of two former Kop favourites makes the encounter even more intriguing.

Liverpool weren’t best pleased with the way Barca conducted their business in their pursuit of Suarez and, in particular, Coutinho.

Players past and present constantly talking up the possibility of Coutinho joining the Camp Nou club resulting in the Brazilian handing in a transfer request and forcing a move in January 2018.

But after previously losing Mascherano and Suarez to the same club, Liverpool refused to be taken for mugs.

Not only did the club’s sporting director Michael Edwards demand a massive £146 million for Coutinho, but he also agreed a rather interesting clause.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Edwards made Barca agree to a £100 million premium if they want to sign another Liverpool player before summer 2020.

The report states: “Edwards not only squeezed £146m from Barcelona — the third biggest transfer fee in history — but got them to agree to a £100m premium if they were to sign another Liverpool player before summer 2020.”

For example, if they wanted to sign Virgil van Dijk, who is probably valued around £120 million, Barca would have to pay £220 million.

In short, Liverpool have made it pretty much impossible for Barca to sign one of their players until next summer.

It seems the Reds have got the upper hand when it comes to transfer negotiations but who will come out on top when the two clash over 180 minutes?
