The six nominees for the PFA Player of the Year award were announced on Saturday.

Virgil van Dijk, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva, Eden Hazard and Sadio Mane will all compete for the prestigious honour.

Liverpool’s Van Dijk is the favourite to claim the prize after an outstanding season at the heart of the Reds’ defence.

Fourteen out of 21 BBC pundits recently selected Van Dijk as their player of the year and it would be a surprise if the centre-back doesn’t come out on top.

That is despite the excellent form of Sterling, who has scored 17 goals in 30 league appearances this season.

Van Dijk’s case has been supported by the likes of Alan Shearer and Ian Wright but according to the statistics, he actually hasn’t been the best player in the top flight.

According to WhoScored’s data, Hazard has been the no.1 man.

The Belgian has scored 16 goals and provided 12 assists for the Blues and it’s hard not to feel that his case to claim the award is hurt simply because Chelsea aren’t in contention to win the title.

He has a rating of 7.79 on WhoScored, while Van Dijk is tied-fifth with a score of 7.41.

Check out the top 10 below.

1 | Eden Hazard | Chelsea | 7.79

2 | Raheem Sterling | Manchester City | 7.67

3 | Sergio Aguero | Manchester City | 7.53

3= | Mohamed Salah | Liverpool | 7.53

5 | Paul Pogba | Manchester United | 7.41

5= | Virgil van Dijk | Liverpool | 7.41

7 | Sadio Mane | Liverpool | 7.39

8 | Harry Kane | Tottenham | 7.38

9 | Leroy Sane | Manchester City | 7.33

10 | Fernandinho | Manchester City | 7.32

So Van Dijk hasn’t even been Liverpool’s best player this season, let alone the best in the entire division.

That said, some may lose faith in WhoScored’s ratings when they realise he has the same score as Pogba.

Have we underrated Hazard’s season? Quite possibly.
