It was another afternoon to forget for Manchester United and David de Gea this weekend. The Red Devils were brushed aside by Everton at Goodison Park, suffering a humiliating 4-0 defeat with Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott all scoring. The result confined United to their sixth defeat in just eight games as questions start to mount about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's regime at Old Trafford. However, amidst all the criticism for players like Anthony Martial and Nemanja Matic, there was renewed disappointment in their number one goalkeeper.De Gea has endured one of his least consistent seasons with the club and hasn't seemed the same since his run of mistakes for Spain at the World Cup.

De Gea's error vs Everton

One minute he's producing an absolute wonder save against West Ham, the next he's allowing a tame shot from Lionel Messi to squirm underneath him.

There were more questions raised about him during the Everton game and especially in regards to Sigurdsson's long-range strike, where De Gea seemed incredibly slow to respond.

"The standards that he’s set himself, you’d expect a goalkeeper of his quality to do better and to save that," Paul Robinson remarked on beIN Sports.

Weakness from long range

"That’s come from a long way out, it’s skipped up off the turf. It’s not a goalkeeping mistake but for the standards and level he’s set himself, he’ll be disappointed.’

And after failing to stop Digne's strike, the Spaniard picked up the unwanted title of having conceded the most Premier League shots from outside the penalty area in 2019.

Yan Valery and James Ward-Prowse both scored against United from range, while Granit Xhaka also managed the feat thanks to some questionable goalkeeping.

Take a look at the reaction to his performance down below:

The best goalkeeper in the world? Perhaps, but not on current form.

There's always going to be more criticism for De Gea when we compare him to his own gold standard, but the fact of the matter is he could have done so much better this weekend.

However, unlike the game-changing moments against Arsenal and Barcelona, it was hard to see United securing any other result regardless of De Gea's performance.

It will certainly frustrate United fans, though, when you consider the 28-year-old has reportedly been demanding much higher wages and is potentially threatening to leave.

We'll let supporters decide whether or not his form this season means United should cave in, but club officials definitely have some more bargaining chips now.

If the Red Devils are to secure themselves a place in the Champions League, they'll need their number one to rediscover his very best form.
