Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win away to Cardiff on Sunday afternoon. After a goal-less first half, Georginio Wijnaldum smashed the Reds into the lead before James Milner secured the points with an 81st-minute spot kick. The penalty call has proved to be quite controversial as many fans believe Mohamed Salah went down too easily under pressure from Sean Morrison. It makes no difference if he dived or not because the foul was given and Milner converted from 12-yards.With the win, Liverpool leapfrogged Manchester City to move back into first place. They now have 88 points, while the Citizens have 86 plus a game in hand.

The title race will surely go down to the final day - but Jurgen Klopp's side have already set a Premier League era club-record with their points haul.

88 is the highest total they've achieved in a single season since 1987-88 when they recorded 90 points in the First Division.

Unsurprisingly, they won the league that season but in the modern era, even surpassing that number won't guarantee them their first PL title in 2018/19.

But, 88 points would have been enough to win the competition in 14 of the previous 26 seasons.

With the same total, Liverpool would have been champions in 1992/93,1995/96, 1996/97, 1997/98, 1998/99, 2000/01, 2001/02, 2002/03, 2007/08, 2009/10, 2010/11, 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2015/16.

That statistic just proves how tough the competition has been between England's top two sides this season and with just a few weeks to go, it's about to get even more intense.

City have four games left, starting with a Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Following that, Pep Guardiola's side face another tough away test against Burnley before hosting Leicester City at the Etihad. They travel to Brighton on the final day of the season.

Liverpool's last three matches see them play Huddersfield at home and Newcastle away before finishing the season against Wolves at Anfield.

This season will go right down to the wire and even a club-record breaking points haul might not be enough to deliver Liverpool their first Premier League title.
