With just weeks left in the 2018/19 season, the race for the Premier League title remains well and truly open.

Last season's centurions Manchester City are looking to retain their title, but they remain two points behind Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool - albeit with a game in hand.

Should City win all four of their remaining league fixtures, then they'll be crowned champions. But any dropped points will give Liverpool the chance to swoop in and claim their first league title in the Premier League era.

Despite Pep Guardiola's men maintaining the high standards they set last season, Liverpool's performances and attractive football have arguably made them the stars of the show this year.

The team has certainly come a long way since Klopp's appointment. And their improvements, particularly in defence, have been a testament to that.

The signing of Virgil van Dijk in January 2018 was an utter masterstroke, as the Dutchman has quickly risen to become one of the best defenders in world football.

Van Dijk's move came after a torrid spell of defensive woes for the Reds. One player who was once seen as the solution is Joel Matip.

Matip joined from FC Schalke on a free transfer in summer 2016. The 27-year-old has started in 21 games for the Reds across all competitions this season, stepping in for the injured Joe Gomez.

One Twitter user has now compiled a video of all the times Matip has played it out from the back this season - and it shows exactly how far this team has come under Klopp.

Check it out here:

Impressive, eh?

The clip notes how quickly Klopp's side can now turn defence into attack through the German's brand of 'heavy metal football'.

Stars such as Mohamed Salah and Van Dijk have rightly been praised as key influences to Liverpool's success. This compilation, however, indicates just how far a positive mindset and brand of football can take a team.
