Manchester United simply weren’t good enough against Manchester City on Wednesday.

Following their 4-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday, many fans and pundits criticised their application and work-rate.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side may have improved their attitude in the Manchester derby, they were just simply outclassed by City.

After a fairly even first-half, Bernardo Silva’s strike in the 54th-minute broke the deadlock.

From then, there was only one winner.

And United were opened up again 12 minutes later.

Raheem Sterling broke forward with the ball and Sergio Aguero’s diagonal run off the ball appeared to totally confuse the entire United back line.

In fact, still images show that the team were caught in a 1-1-1-1-3-3 formation as Sterling slipped in Leroy Sane, who fired past David de Gea.

We’re all for revolutionising football but we’re not sure the vertical defensive line will really catch on.

As you can imagine, Twitter reacted rather hilariously after screengrabs of United’s back line went viral.

Following their latest loss - their seventh in nine games - United have a tough task to finish in the top-four and qualify for next season’s Champions League.

And while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is fully aware of the massive clash against Chelsea on Sunday, he’s already thinking of next season.

"We have to work harder," said Solskjaer after the game.

"The first day of pre-season is going to be a big one and we will see who has looked after themselves in the summer.

"We know we must deliver a good performance against Chelsea."
