Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat were both retired from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix today in possibly the most ridiculous moment of this year’s F1 season so far.
Ricciardo overtook Kvyat during the 32nd lap but broke too late after doing so, and, as a result, could not complete Turn 3 in time before getting stuck in the run off area.
Meanwhile, Toro Rosso driver Kvyat did not have the space to make the left turn and had to stop at an awkward angle.
Ricciardo then reversed directly into Kvyat, leaving their vehicles unable to continue and meaning the former teammates both suffered their second non-finish of the campaign.
Viewers expressed confusion at how Renault’s Ricciardo did not see Kvyat and speculated that he would be punished for the incident, whilst others criticised the latter for taking too long to reverse.

The Formula 1 Twitter account diplomatically described it as a “strange collision”, whilst Toro Rosso simply reported that Kvyat retired “after an incident out of [their] control” and Renault stated that Ricciardo was pulled out due to “damage on his car”.
Other viewers questioned whether 29-year-old Ricciardo ignored his mirrors as the cars were literally feet apart.
The bizarre moment was understandably frustrating for Kvyat, who had qualified in sixth and was hoping to build upon the solitary point he had earned in the opening three races.
He drove with the Australian for Red Bull in 2015 and 2016 and also had to pull out in Azerbaijan during the latter season.
Valtteri Bottas won the race on the day as he and Lewis Hamilton ensured that Mercedes set a new record for four consecutive one-twos at the start of a season.
Meanwhile, the wait begins to see if there will be any further fallout from one of the weirdest crashes you will ever see.
