Manchester United’s top-four hopes suffered another blow on Sunday afternoon after drawing 1-1 with Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The result means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men remain three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with only two games remaining.

Arsenal were beaten 3-0 by Leicester City earlier on Sunday, meaning they stay one place above United in fifth, but now find themselves just the one point clear of the Red Devils.

United enjoyed a dream start against Maurizio Sarri’s side, taking the lead through Juan Mata’s 11th-minute finish from close range.

However, the two sides went into half-time level after the under-fire David de Gea made yet another mistake, gifting Marcos Alonso an equaliser.

The Spanish shot-stopper spilled Antonio Rudiger's long-range effort right into the path of Chelsea’s left full-back, who made no mistake with his finish.

It was a bitter blow for Solskjaer, who’d watched his side enjoy the better of the opening 45 minutes until that point.

Lukaku’s pass for the opening goal, scored by Mata on his 31st birthday, was an example of the confidence United were playing with early on.

The second half was less dramatic. No further goals were scored and clear-cut chances were few and far between.

But there was more bad news for United in the form of injuries to Marcus Rashford and Eric Bailly.

Rashford was replaced by Alexis Sanchez in the 65th minute after limping off, while Bailly followed minutes later with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

The only other controversial moment involved Marcos Rojo, who was fortunate to avoid a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Willian.

The Argentine defender almost scored at the death but his header was cleared off the line by Pedro.

United finish the season with games against Huddersfield Town (A) and Cardiff City (H).

Chelsea, meanwhile, take on Watford (H) and Leicester City (A) in their final games, but must juggle their domestic responsibilities with the Europa League.

The Blues go head-to-head against Eintracht Frankfurt in their semi-final first leg on Thursday night.
