Manchester City and Liverpool are battling it out in the tightest Premier League title race we've seen for many years. They have just made history by raking up 90+ points each - which is the first time two different sides have ever reached that number in the same season. The gulf in class between the top two and third is clear to see as well. The Reds have slipped into second on 91 points, while third-placed Tottenham have won just 70 points during this campaign.City and Liverpool will finish comfortably ahead of the rest, but behind them, there's a real race on to make the top-four. As it stands, just five points separate Spurs in third and Manchester United in sixth.

With two games left, those sides, plus Chelsea and Arsenal, who are currently in fourth and fifth, all have the opportunity to qualify for the Champions League next season.

And it's so close right now because all four of those teams have been on terrible runs of form recently.

Following this weekend's results, which saw Man United draw 1-1 with Chelsea, Arsenal lose 3-0 to Leicester and Tottenham lose 1-0 to West Ham, Gary Lineker provided us with some rather embarrassing stats.

"Points won in the last 3 games by the top 2: Manchester City 9... Liverpool 9. 18 between them in 6 games," he wrote, before comparing those two sides to the rest.

"Points won in the last 3 games by the teams going for the top 4: Spurs 3...Chelsea 2...Manchester United 1... Arsenal 0. Just 6 between them in 12 games."

When you look at it like that, it's almost laughable that two of the teams challenging for the top-four will be playing in the Champions League next year because every single one is way off Liverpool and City.

Things get even worse when you compare the number of points that all these teams have dropped throughout the season.

In the past nine days, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd have dropped a total of 27 points. Manchester City and Liverpool have dropped 33 between them all season.

That just says it all really. The top two are miles ahead of the rest right now and it will be interesting to see what happens next season - because this gap needs to be closed.
