Virgil van Dijk beat Manchester City's Raheem Sterling to deservedly win the 2018-19 PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday evening.

The Dutchman joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 and, in addition to performing well individually, has had a remarkable impact on the team as a whole.

Since his arrival, Jurgen Klopp's men have transformed an exciting team which leaked a few goals to having the best defensive record in the entire Premier League.

Van Dijk's organisational and leadership qualities out on the pitch are clear for all to see, and Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and especially Joe Gomez have all looked better next to him.

That said, at the time his signing was announced, plenty of people were questioning the huge £75 million fee, and Manchester United fans actually created a chant about it.

When Van Dijk signed for Liverpool

Following two-and-a-half years at Southampton, it was announced on 27 December, 2017 that Van Dijk would join Liverpool when the then-upcoming 2018 January window opened.

The £75 million transfer remains a world-record fee for a defender to this day but no one is talking about his price tag now because of the phenomenal difference he's made to Liverpool's team.

His influence even extends to the Netherlands national team because he's captained them to somewhat of a renaissance under Ronald Koeman in the last six to eight months.

Man United fans' chant about Van Dijk

After Van Dijk's move was confirmed (but before he'd even made his debut for Liverpool), some Man Utd supporters took the time to come up with a chant mocking their bitter rivals' acquisition.

As you can see in the video below, they had the cheek to compare the new PFA Player of the Year to United and England's much-maligned defender Phil Jones.

The lyrics in full are: "You've got Van Dijk, Virgil van Dijk. I just don't think you understand. £75 mil, he's just a s*** Phil (Jones), you've got Virgil van Dijk."

Who's laughing now?

Those Red Devils fans certainly look silly now because, while Jones has endured another injury-hit campaign, Van Dijk's established himself as the league's most dominant centre-back.

Liverpool's defensive leader is regarded by many as the best central defender in the world right now and could lift both the title and the Champions League come the end of the season.
