"He's having a nightmare of a time. He needs the summer."

Gary Neville couldn't help but sympathise with Manchester United's David de Gea after his latest howler against Chelsea on Sunday.

United took the lead through Juan Mata in the 11th minute, but just before half-time, De Gea spilled a harmless shot from Antonio Rudiger that fell straight to Marcos Alonso.

Alonso made no mistake from a tight angle to make it 1-1 and leave United's goalkeeper humiliated for a second game running.

During last week's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, De Gea was beaten by a shot from Leroy Sane that was straight at him and he should have saved.

Something is clearly bothering the Spaniard, and Neville thinks he needs the summer to "clear his head, get away from football and reset".

"David de Gea, I don't what to say. He is having a nightmare of a time," said Neville on commentary. "Well done to Alonso, who is alive and alert, but De Gea, what a time he is having.

"I remember I had a nightmare time at the end of the 1999/00 season and I just needed the summer. De Gea needs the summer to clear his head, get away from football and reset."

It's widely believed that De Gea's uncertain future and ongoing contract talks have become a distraction for him.

Should that be the case, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a big problem on his hands because the 28-year-old's recent decline is concerning.

De Gea is playing like he did when he first joined United in 2011, when he looked sapped of confidence and was making costly mistakes on a weekly basis.

A compilation video has now been made of the errors he's made that have led to goals over the past 18 months and it makes for painful viewing.

Poor bloke, he can't catch a break at the moment.

De Gea has long been regarded as the world's best goalkeeper, but his form since the turn of 2018 doesn't show that.

One way or another the Spain international's future needs to be sorted, whether that's signing a new contract with United or leaving in the summer transfer window.
