Tottenham vs Ajax in the Champions League semi-final - who would have predicted that at the start of the season?Spurs somehow managed to progress through their group after picking up just one point from their opening three matches. But they squeezed past Inter Milan into second place behind Barcelona, before progressing past Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City,As for Ajax, they also came second behind Bayern Munich but have since beaten both Real Madrid and Juventus in the knockout stages. There’s no doubt both sides deserved their place in the last four.

The first-leg at Spurs’ new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was almost impossible to call.

However, it was the Dutch side that grabbed an early away goal.

Brilliant build-up play led to Donny van de Beek opening the scoring after just 15 minutes.

Ajax continued to impress but, as the first-half progressed, Spurs improved.

However, their momentum was halted following a horrible clash between Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana as they challenged for an aerial ball.

Replays showed that the two Spurs defenders clashed heads, leaving Vertonghen with blood all over his face.

After being cleaned up, it was surprising to see the Spurs medical team send him back onto the pitch.

Even referee Antonio Lahoz ran over to Vertonghen to check that he was ok to continue.

However, the former Ajax man lasted just a matter of seconds before he signalled that he wasn’t able to continue.

Things quickly escalated as the defender doubled over and was barely able to stand before having to be carried off the pitch.

Journalist Matt Scott then claimed Vertonghen ‘vomited’ and ‘collapsed’ as he was substituted by Moussa Sissoko.

In truth, there was no way he should have been given the opportunity to return to the pitch after such a hefty clash of heads.
