Virgil van Dijk picked up the PFA Player of the Year award on Sunday after his incredible campaign with Liverpool.Since his £75 million arrival on Merseyside in January 2018, Van Dijk has transformed Liverpool’s defence and helped turn Jurgen Klopp’s side into Premier League and Champions League contenders. And a pretty astonishing stat emerged recently that sums just how good Van Dijk has been.Apparently, the centre-back hasn’t been dribbled past all season in all competitions. That’s insane.

But when you watch Van Dijk, it’s certainly believable.

Not only is the 27-year-old fast and strong, but his reading of the game is also second to none. He just seems to be one step ahead of attackers and rarely gets himself in a position where he needs to make a last-ditch tackle.

Van Dijk’s remarkable stat could well be ruined when he comes up against Lionel Messi in the Champions League semi-final, though.

However, there’s a belief that Van Dijk has actually been dribbled past in the Premier League this season.

A video has emerged that appears to show Marcus Rashford take on Van Dijk at Anfield during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory back in December.

On the left side of the box, Rashford was closed down by Van Dijk only for the United youngster to knock the ball past his opponent, using his pace to get a cross in.

Rashford’s cross didn’t find a teammate but there’s no doubt he got past Van Dijk with the ball.

In fact, according to official definitions, that would have counted as a successful dribble for Rashford.

WhoScored.com’s glossary suggests that a successful dribble is “taking on an opponent and successfully making it past them whilst retaining the ball.”

Rashford did that.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Van Dijk was 'dribbled past'.

“Being dribbled past by an opponent without winning a tackle,” is the definition of being dribbled.

As Van Dijk didn’t attempt to make a tackle, it didn’t officially count as being dribbled past - despite it counting as a successful dribble for Rashford.

Make sense? Good.
