Barcelona host Liverpool at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie.

They are undoubtedly two of Europe's top teams, but incredibly, this will be the first time they've met in 12 years.

In 2007, Barca and Liverpool went head-to-head in the last 16 of the competition and it was Rafa Benitez's side who won the tie thanks to a famous first-leg win in Catalonia.

To reach the final this time around, Jurgen Klopp's side will need to provide similar heroics tonight.

So ahead of kick-off, here's a look back at what happened last time Barcelona hosted Liverpool at the Camp Nou.

THE BUILD-UP

The match was played on February 21st, 2007 - but it wasn't football that dominated headlines in the build-up.

Instead, the media was focused on a training ground bust-up between Liverpool duo Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise.

It was reported that the Welsh striker used a golf club to attack his teammate after a drunken night out in the Algarve, where the Reds had held a training camp the week before.

The dispute between the pair seemingly started when Bellamy took offense to Riise refusing to sing at the team's karaoke party.

The two men squared up to each other before players quickly defused the situation, but Bellamy, who believed he had 'lost face' in front of his teammates, went to track down Riise later.

He attacked the Norwegian's legs, leaving him bruised. It certainly wasn't the ideal preparation for Liverpool ahead of their crunch tie.

But Riise and Bellamy showed no signs of fallout when the game kicked off - and they were the match winners on the night.

THE MATCH

Barca, who were aiming to defend their Champions League crown that season, made the perfect start.

It took just 15 minutes for Deco to open the scoring, heading past Pepe Reina at the back post after good work from Gianluca Zambrotta.

Most expected the worst after Barca's flying start, but Liverpool were able to ride the storm and got back into the game minutes before half-time.

Bellamy was left in acres of space inside the Barca box and he met Steve Finnan's cross with a powerful header that Victor Valdes spilled over the line.

The scrappy goal certainly wasn't memorable, but the celebration was, as the striker wheeled away and mimicked a golf swing near the corner flag.

In the second half, a Barca team that featured a front three of Javier Saviola, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi, appeared to run out of ideas.

Incredibly, over the course of 90 minutes, Finnan had more touches of the ball than Messi!

And after a number of missed opportunities at both ends, Riise popped up with 16 minutes to play and smashed Liverpool into a 2-1 lead, drilling his close-range effort into the roof of the net.

The visitors were able to hold on to their slender lead and walked away from the Camp Nou with a shock victory against the Champions League holders.

MORE OF THE SAME?

Despite a 1-0 loss in the second leg at Anfield, Liverpool advanced through the tie on away goals.

Klopp's side will be hoping for similar Champions League heroics 12 years on - and this time, the two sides meet to decide who will reach the final.
