Irish jockey Ruby Walsh has announced his immediate retirement from horse racing.

Walsh has had a stellar career and is widely considered as one of the greatest riders of all time.

He boasts two Grand National wins in 2000 and 2005 and has also had more recent success in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, winning in 2007 and 2009 with Kauto Star.

On Wednesday evening, the Irishman rode joint-favourite Kemboy to victory in the Punchestown Gold Cup and soon after the race, announced his retirement from the sport.

Kemboy was amongst the favourites to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2020 but someone else will now be racing him next year.

"I've been a jockey now for 24 years and there comes a time when you want to do something else," Walsh told RTE, per BBC Sport.

"I've been so lucky from day one to ride so many top horses. No jockey is any good without the horses - they play such an important role.

"I was always taught as a kid that it is all about the big occasion and it was always about the big races for me.

"I may have got a fraction more injuries in my time than a lot of other jockeys, but that's racing."

As well as reflecting on his career, Walsh also commented on Kemboy's performance following Wednesday's Gold Cup win.

"He jumped really well. He quickened and quickened and quickened - he has pace and stamina and has a real knack of jumping."

Walsh retires as one of the greatest jockeys of all time and some of his most notable career wins are listed below:

12 X Irish Champion Jockey
11 X Leading Cheltenham Festival rider
2 X Grand National
3 X Irish National
2 X Cheltenham Gold Cup
4 X Champion Hurdle
3 X Champion Chase

5 X King George VI Chase.

Happy retirement, Ruby!
