Ajax are undoubtedly the story of this season’s Champions League.Erik ten Hag’s side have one foot in the final of the competition after defeating Tottnham 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday evening. The latest triumph on their travels means that Ajax, who went through qualifying to reach the group stage, have now won at Real Madrid, Juventus and Tottenham in the space of less that two months. And they’ve done it by playing a fearless style of football.Ten Hag’s side press high and take risks. They keep things compact and the full-backs provide support high up the pitch.

And while the teamsheet may appear to show a 4-2-3-1 formation, Ajax play with a fluidity that means the players are often in an inverted 2-3-5 look.

There was a moment in the Tottenham match where Nicolas Tagliafico, David Neres, Dusan Tadic, Hakim Ziyech and Donny van de Beek were positioned in a front five.

Frenkie de Jong, Lasse Schone and Joel Veltman were just behind while Daley Blind and Matthijs de Ligt fulfilled their centre-back duties.

We saw a similar look when Ajax hosted Juventus in April.

One clip during the win showed just how impressive Ajax are on the eye.

De Jong has been the star of the show and Barcelona must be oozing at the thought of him playing at Camp Nou next season.

The 21-year-old’s stats for the game were thoroughly impressive.

Then there’s De Ligt, the centre-back who players with a maturity that belies his 19 years.

"He is also strong with both feet, has an extremely good range of passing, can head the ball, scores goals and is a real leader at the back already,” Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar told Goal.

Inspired by the legendary Johan Cruyff’s vision for the game, this Ajax side is very special.
