Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez defeated Danny Jacobs in Las Vegas on points yesterday in a middleweight unification clash.

Judges scored the fight 115-113, 115-113, 116-112 in favour of the 28-year-old after 12 rounds of gruelling action in the squared-circle.

It was perhaps no wonder that the Mexican emerged victorious after he took a ferocious punch square in the jaw during the ninth round without even flinching. After a strongly contested opening where the momentum switched between the two fighters several times, Jacobs landed a very powerful left hook to send the crowd wild. However, Alvarez amazingly stayed upright and immediately responded with a few punches of his own to the surprise of everyone watching.

He then went on to fend off Jacobs’ efforts in the final rounds to secure the narrow victory.

The moment was unanimously agreed to be the highlight of the fight on social media, with one Twitter user saying “It must be so disheartening to hit a man that hard with your best shot and it doesn’t even faze him.”

Another said: “Most fighters get knocked out from a clean perfect hit like that, unreal!”

The result meant that Alvarez added the IBF middleweight title to his WBA (Super), WBC, The Ring, and lineal titles and extends his record to 52 wins from 55 fights.

“We knew he was going to be a difficult fighter,” said Alvarez about Jacobs after the fight. “It was just what we thought because of the style of fight that he brings, but we just did our job.”

The speculation has already begun that Alvarez will be looking to face current WBO title holder Demetrius Andrade in his next bout in an attempt to become the undisputed middleweight champion.

Alvarez has also stated that he would willing to take on Gennady Golovkin for a third time.

Both men might need to consider that catching Alvarez with your best punch doesn’t put him off as much as you would think.
