Manchester United officially won't be playing in the Champions League next season after their 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town.It caps off a topsy-turvy season that has seen expectations change almost month to month.Last season's 2nd-place finish meant the title was the initial target but those hopes quickly fell away and Jose Mourinho was sacked in December.Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as caretaker boss was met with no expectation at all, but his initial spell was so good that the Champions League places looked quite likely. His appointment as permanent boss, however, has seen a dramatic downturn in form - they've won only two of the nine games since.

Although only Manchester City and Liverpool have picked up more points in Solskjaer's time in charge, the performances are arguably worse than they were under Mourinho.

It had to be said, though, that Solskjaer certainly isn't entirely to blame - the effort levels simply aren't there anymore.

And nothing summed that up quite like a short clip of Luke Shaw against Huddersfield.

The United left-back can be seen making a token effort to press before lightly jogging back while the Terriers counter.

You can see it here:

To say that isn't good enough would be an understatement - you'd be frustrated to see that in Sunday league.

There have been accusations that United's players are exhausted after a poor pre-season. This really doesn't look like exhaustion, though - it just looks casual.

It's easy to pick on Shaw here but he's not the only problem at United right now. Few of the players look particularly bothered - they're certainly not playing that way.

And now the club are left in need of another rebuild but without Champions League football to support it.

Solskjaer has a massive job on his hands but finding players simply willing to run for United would be a brilliant place to start.
