It’s Europa League football for Manchester United next season after a top four finish was ruled out with a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have ended the season with a whimper, winning just two out of their last 11 matches in all competitions.

There are now serious concerns over whether the club made the right choice to make Solskjaer’s appointment permanent.

The Norwegian made an incredible start when he was made interim manager following Jose Mourinho’s departure in December.

They went on a 12-match unbeaten run in the Premier League and won a thrilling Champions League round-of-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

It seemed as though a return to the old ways was happening, with Solskjaer bringing back the feeling that Sir Alex Ferguson imbued during his successful reign.

With support from Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville, he was given the manager’s job permanently on March 28.

And then everything went south.

The Red Devils crashed out of the Champions League and, following a run of two wins from seven league matches, can’t finish in the top four.

Man United’s misery can be shown by the Premier League table since Solskjaer was handed the job on a full-time basis.

They would be 12th, collecting just eight points from seven games.

Man United's PL form since March 28:

  • Played: 7
  • Won: 2
  • Drawn: 2
  • Lost: 3
  • GF: 7
  • GA: 12
  • Points: 8

Among those results are defeats to Wolves and Everton and a draw against Huddersfield, whose relegation to the Championship was confirmed in March.

Fulham, who will also be playing in the second tier next season, are in better form than Solskjaer’s side.

Many changes are expected at Old Trafford in the summer, with the 46-year-old and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward. expected to oversee a squad overhaul.

"There is the chance you have seen the last of players," Solskjaer said following the Huddersfield draw, per Goal.

To add to the misery, the players wages will be cut 25 per cent after they failed to make the Champions League.
