A Vincent Kompany wonder goal has given Manchester City a 1-0 win against Leicester City and a massive boost in their hunt for the Premier League title.

After Liverpool secured a dramatic victory over Newcastle United at the weekend, all the pressure was on the Citizens to claim all three points in front of a home crowd.

That being said, the visit of Leicester was never going to be an easy task and especially with a former Liverpool manager in Brendan Rodgers sat in the dugout.

Ricardo Pereira showed in the early moments that Leicester really meant business, finding space in the penalty area but seeing his shot blocked heroically by Vincent Kompany.

The Foxes really played up to the occasion and by strangling much of City's build-up play, they curated an incredibly frustrating half for the reigning champions.

However, that didn't stop them from creating the best goal-scoring opportunities and Sergio Aguero came closest of all before the break.

Goal-line technology once again threatened to play a major role in the title race when City's top-scorer saw his header superbly saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

Nevertheless, the Dane - who had also made a smart save from Phil Foden - clawed away the ball just in time to stop Mike Dean's watch from buzzing.

Kompany scores an absolute worldie

The first-half ended goalless and there was a real tension in the air when City emerged, no less than when they came close through Raheem Sterling's tepid header.

City then proceeded to lay siege on the Leicester half and after another superb save from Schmeichel, the breakthrough finally came from Pep Guardiola's men.

Vincent Kompany thumped home a goal of the season contender from absolutely nothing to replicate his heroics from the 2011-12 campaign.

The Belgian has become renowned for headed goals, but this time it was a right-footed screamer that flew past the Leicester number one and into the top corner.

Leicester had a massive opportunity to draw the game level, but Kelechi Iheanacho - who played for City between 2015 and 2017 - but he fluffed his lines at the crucial moment.

City were able to hold on to their lead, elevating them to 95 points, and it means victory against Brighton & Hove Albion will see them retain the Premier League trophy.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will do all their can to apply the pressure against Wolverhampton Wanderers but could still miss out with as much as 97 points.
