Manchester City needed a hero when they went into the final half-an-hour against Leicester goalless. And club captain Vincent Kompany provided that moment of heroism. The Belgian centre-back unleashed an unstoppable 30-yard strike which soared past Kasper Schmeichel and into the net.Pep Guardiola's side held on to clinch a valuable three points and now know a win on the final day of the season will see them crowned champions. But is Kompany's strike against Leicester the goal of the season?

There have been a number of incredible strikes in the past nine months.

Andros Townsend, Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah have all scored goals worthy of winning the award.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville looked back at the goals of the season after last night's game.

And they both think that Kompany's has been the best of the campaign.

"I think Andros Townsend's goal was a better goal in some ways but I always think when you look back in history at great goals, they are better when there's a meaning behind them," Carragher said.

"I just think the 1-0 victory, how late on in the season it is, I'm going to go with Kompany over Townsend's because of what it means."

Neville agreed, saying: "I'm going with Kompany's. I think Tony Adams' goal last day of the season (vs Everton in 1998)... the Steve Bruce one against Sheffield Wedneday (1993)... you don't see them season in, season out but when they do come... that was an incredible moment tonight that."

Townsend will definitely disagree with either pundit.

Gary Lineker also praised Kompany's goal and branded it goal of the season.

He wrote on Twitter: "Given the context that has to be the Goal of the Season from @VincentKompany.

"Incredible moment in this most extraordinary season."
