Barcelona face a pivotal summer after being humiliated by Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday evening.

The Blaugrana took a comfortable 3-0 lead to Merseyside and the Reds were without key men Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita from the start.

But what followed in the 90 minutes on the pitch was a true Champions League miracle, with Liverpool winning 4-0 and progressing to their second final in two years.

As for Barca, it is the second time in two years that they have been eliminated after winning by three goals in the first-leg of a tie.

While Ernesto Valverde's side are on course for another domestic double, their whole season was geared towards lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time since 2015.

So it's no wonder that the Barca board have now drawn up a five-point plan to try and fix the collapse the world witnessed at Anfield, per Daily Mail.

CHALLENGE CITY & UTD FOR DE LIGT

Barca know they have to bring in the 'new Gerard Pique', despite the Spaniard enjoying an excellent season in 2018/19.

Ajax's Matthijs de Ligt has been identified as the man to do so and Barca are gearing up to challenge Manchester City and Manchester United for his signature.

The 19-year-old superstar will bring the average age of the team down, with Barca currently possessing seven first-team players over the age of 30.

BRING BACK XAVI TO EVENTUALLY SUCCEED VALVERDE

The defeats to Liverpool and Roma in the last year have raised serious questions about Valverde's job.

Is he really the man to take Barca forward? The board are not sure and they now want to look at a way to bring Xavi back to the club and groom him for the manager position.

He will retire as a player this year and Barca want to make him B team manager, so he can follow the same route as Pep Guardiola - and get the B team back into the second division.

SELL TO BUY IN THE SUMMER

Given the fact that Barca have spent lavishly in the last two years, they will need to sell before they buy big in the summer.

Despite the fact they have been great servants to the club, Ivan Rakitic and Samuel Umtiti are being viewed as the men to help fund the new project.

Both have high market values, especially Umtiti who is still just 25.

SORT OUT THE COUTINHO DILEMMA

And what a dilemma it is. The £142m Brazilian has been a total disaster and was dreadful in both games against Liverpool.

However, selling him may not be easy, because nobody actually wants him right now and Barca would not be able to recoup anywhere near what they paid for him.

They will now look at potential loan deals for the former Liverpool man with a view to a permanent switch further down the line.

COMMENCE OPERATION GRIEZMANN

Luis Suarez is near the end of his tether and Barca have no quality options to replace the Uruguayan.

So it seems logical to pursue Antoine Griezmann once again, a forward who certainly suits Barca's slick playing style.

The Frenchman is approaching the prime years of his career and would only cost around £103.5m - which isn't bad for a player of his age (28) and ilk.

Selling Coutinho may be fundamental to pulling of the deal, though...
