David Luiz has signed a new contract at Chelsea.

The Brazilian defender was out of contract at the club in the summer.

But Chelsea have moved to ensure he will stay beyond the season.

While it's not surprising to see Luiz's contract extended, the length of his new deal is surprising.

Chelsea have long held a policy where they only give players over the age of 30 a one-year deal.

Not even the likes of Frank Lampard, John Terry or Didier Drogba were given contracts over one-year.

But that was broken today as Luiz signed a contract until 2021.

The 32-year-old stated that he was happy to stay at the west London club.

"I am so happy to be here and to have this opportunity to stay. I love this club and I still have the ambition of a young player," he told Chelseafc.com.

"It means a lot to reach another European final, and we still have the opportunity to finish in the top three of the Premier League this season and I will continue to try to do my best to help the team."

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: "We are delighted David Luiz will be staying with the club.

"He has set the perfect example to those around him throughout the campaign and been a huge influence on and off the pitch.

"With the Europa League final still to come, we hope to finish off the season with silverware and David will be central to that success in Baku and beyond."

Maurizio Sarri insisted he would change Chelsea's over 30 policy if he were owner.

Back in January, he said: "I haven't a club so my opinion is not important. My opinion is it depends on the situation, I think.

"The situation is not the same for every player over 30 so its my opinion. If you are able to buy Chelsea we can discuss [changing it]."
