Vincent Kompany’s goal for Manchester City in their 1-0 win against Leicester has left them on the brink of the Premier League title.

For 69 minutes of the match, Pep Guardiola’s side huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a way through. Then, Kompany scored an unexpected screamer and City returned to the top of the table.

“We just wanted to hug him and kiss him and say thank you for that goal,” Bernardo Silva said, per City’s website.

It means that City can retain their title with a win against Brighton on the final day of the season.

Liverpool, just a point behind, will be praying for a favour from Chris Hughton’s side. But the situation is out of their control.

The Reds have enjoyed an incredible campaign and victory against Wolves will see them finish on 97 points.

They’ve pushed City all the way but have been unfortunate to go head-to-head with a team that has won 48 points out of a possible 51 in 2019, refusing to crumble under the pressure.

Liverpool players watched Kompany's goal

Rory Smith of the New York Times has penned a detailed report on the title race and one interesting piece comes when he discusses Liverpool’s approach towards City’s games.

According to Smith, Jurgen Klopp has urged his players not to think too much about City’s scores.

James Milner and Joel Matip have both listened. Milner considered it a “waste of energy” to watch Man City’s 2-0 win against rivals Manchester United in April’s derby.

But City’s game against Leicester - where Liverpool were hoping for a favour from former boss Brendan Rodgers - proved too much for Klopp’s players.

And the squad’s WhatsApp group was dominated by the exploding head emoji (🤯) after Kompany’s winner.

They, like everyone else, were left stunned.

There must also have been a pretty deflated feeling among the players.

Leicester were close to taking points from City, which would have given Liverpool the advantage.

Then Kompany, among the unlikeliest of heroes, produced a goal that will be replayed again and again and again if City go on to be champions.
