Manchester City have become the first back-to-back Premier League champions since Manchester United between 2006 and 2009.

The Citizens only needed to avoid defeat away at Brighton to finish the job, yet they comfortably strolled to victory on the south coast.

Pep Guardiola watched his side put four past the Seagulls after Glen Murray opened the scoring, dashing Liverpool's slim hopes of stealing the crown.

Jurgen Klopp’s men did hold up their end of the bargain thanks to an unanswered brace from Sadio Mane, but it wasn't enough to pull off what would've been a massive upset.

While the final day wasn’t quite as dramatic as it could have been, it will do little to ease Liverpool fans’ heartache.

Their astonishing tally of 97 points is the third-highest in English top-flight history and would’ve been enough to win 116 of the previous 119 titles.

Nevertheless, the 29-year drought continues - and Wolves fans weren’t shy about rubbing salt into their hosts’ wounds.

As news of City's comeback spread around Anfield, the travelling Wolves support made sure to twist the knife.

“He’s top of the league, he’s top of the league, Raheem Sterling, he’s top of the league,” they sang as the eventual champions returned to the summit.

Their taunting was sure to have struck a nerve among Kopites as they watched one of their former stars taste yet more glory at their expense - especially given what Sterling himself had to say about City's triumph.

Speaking to Sky Sports shortly after the final whistle, the England international said: “This is exactly what I came to the club for, to win trophies, to be in these moments.

"I’m just happy to become a second Premier League medal winner. It’s fantastic, it’s an amazing day today.”

Sterling also picked up a trio of individual honours this season: the PFA Young Player of the Year, the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year, and a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

But rather than focussing on his personal achievements, the 24-year-old opted to focus on the influence of Guardiola.

“The manager here, his mentality is the best. His mentality is about winning no matter what game it is. It’s always about winning, winning, winning, and how we can win," he said.

“It’s a credit to him and the way he sets us up, and I’m just happy to be here working, learning and winning another Premier League.”
