Manchester United’s miserable season ended in a whimper, as already relegated Cardiff City stormed the Theatre of Dreams to claim a 2-0 win.

The result summed up United’s season perfectly despite some mid-season heroics when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was first given the reigns.

In fact, a top-four finish and a run in the Champions League had looked more than achievable at one point after their remarkable fightback against French giants Paris Saint-Germain.

However, the wheels have since fallen off again and United’s form guide in the latter part of the season makes for ugly viewing.

Since that stunning win in Paris, United’s results read as follows: LLWLLWLLLDDL.

Ouch.

Solskjaer’s mandate of returning the club to the top of the English game looks a herculean one but the Norwegian is determined to make it happen.

Solskjaer is United through and through, and you can be sure his teams’ apologetic end to the season will have hurt.

Controversial midfielder Paul Pogba clashed with fans during a post-game lap of appreciation in a worrying moment that shows all is not well at the club.

“We have been poor,” said Solskjaer in the aftermath of their final game.

“We have hit more or less a brick wall so that’s of course very disappointing.

“But then again a big plus is that the season is over, we can put a big line over it and look forward.”

Those are not exactly the words of a happy man, are they?

In fact, a report in The Sun has revealed that Solskjaer was so enraged following the Cardiff flop that he cancelled today’s season debriefing, angering some of the players in the process.

Players would normally use the end of season debrief to say their good-byes to certain players leaving the club but this year they will not be given that opportunity.

It seems that Solskjaer is done playing nice now, after also warning his players that they will not be allowed to travel for the pre-season tour if they return to training at below peak fitness.

There is a lot of work that lies ahead and the Norwegian will know how great a task it will be to give United’s demanding fans what they want.

Is he the right man to restore United to former glories?

Time will tell.
