Liverpool and Manchester City's battle for the Premier League title this season will not be forgotten in a hurry.

The two sides swatted aside all before them, amassing 195 points, 62 wins and 184 goals between them.

City finished the season as champions, with Liverpool just one point behind Pep Guardiola's side on 97.

It's the highest total ever recorded by a runner-up and it sums up just how much better the pair have been than the rest.

In such a tight, tense battle, the smallest margins can make all the difference. With that in mind, we've pinpointed seven key moments that ended up costing Liverpool the title.

1. Sadio Mane's disallowed goal away at Arsenal

It seems an age ago that Arsenal held Jurgen Klopp's side to a 1-1 draw, with Alexandre Lacazette earning the Gunners a priceless point late on.

James Milner had given the visitors the lead after Mane had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside in the first-half.

Would the Gunners have come back from two goals down? Probably not, a vital two points missed for the Reds.

2. Vincent Kompany escaping a red card

The Belgian centre-back loves a poorly-timed challenge when the opposition is trying to counter and his tackle on Mohamed Salah when Liverpool visited the Etihad was a disgrace.

Kompany managed to escape a red card with the score locked at 0-0, with City eventually going on to win the game 2-1.

Given how well Liverpool played on the night, they probably would have taken advantage of Pep Guardiola's side if they had been a man down.

3. John Stones' miraculous clearance

That game at the Etihad certainly had drama. Before Kompany's reckless tackle, Stones somehow managed to prevent an own-goal from Ederson with a ridiculous clearance.

The ball was 11mm from going over the line, with Salah somehow missing his follow-up shot completely.

In such a big game, the first goal is always vital and Liverpool missed out by the smallest of margins.

4. Naby Keita's penalty appeal waved away vs Leicester

After beating Crystal Palace 4-3 the game before, Liverpool were desperate to maintain their advantage at the top by beating Leicester.

Mane had given them an early lead, but Harry Maguire equalised shortly before half-time.

It was a very even game, but Keita had a stonewall penalty waved away by the referee. VAR would certainly have awarded it...

5. Divock Origi's last-minute miss vs West Ham

Had the Belgian actually put the chance away, it would have been highly controversial as the replays showed he was indeed offside.

However, the flag stayed down and the striker shanked his effort wide and failed to deliver an undeserved - but crucial - two extra points on the road.

Mane's opening goal in the 1-1 draw that night was also offside...

6. Not taking advantage of Man Utd's injuries

United were in the midst of their mini-revival under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when Liverpool visited Old Trafford, but they were hampered by a series of injuries in the first-half.

Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford were all stricken, with Rashford having to play the full 90 minutes despite struggling to walk.

But Liverpool failed to take advantage and were held to a 0-0 draw, while City just racked up the wins and closed the gap.

7. Mohamed Salah's miss vs Everton

The game the title race changed. Liverpool's 0-0 draw away at Merseyside rivals Everton meant that City moved a point clear and put them in the driving seat.

And it was Salah's chance in the first-half that should have prevented the tide changing.

The Egyptian was one-on-one with Jordan Pickford and had the goal at his mercy, but only found the Everton goalie's gloves.

After that game in early March, neither Liverpool or City dropped a single point, highlighting just how crucial the little details were in this titanic skirmish for Premier League dominance.
