So Liverpool’s wait to lift the Premier League trophy goes on.Jurgen Klopp’s side gave it a real good go this year, finishing on 97 points. That would have been enough to win the league in all but one of the previous 26 seasons of the competition. But, unfortunately, they came up against a relentless team in Manchester City.Pep Guardiola’s side won their last 14 matches and collected 51 points out of 54 in 2019.

Rival fans will mock them, but this Liverpool side has been seriously impressive.

Yet they’re still to get over the hurdle and it may be a while before they come this close again.

Liverpool fan breaks down on talkSPORT

Guardiola has already insisted City will be even better next season and it’s hard to imagine Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal all putting up such feeble competition again.

It was all a bit too much for one Liverpool supporter, who was reduced to tears while discussing his team’s second-placed finish.

Terry the Red phoned into talkSPORT on Sunday night when the pain caused him to start sobbing mid-call.

“Oh mate, I just…,” he said.

“What else have we got to do to win this Premier League? Can you tell me that?

“I tell you what mate… 97 points… I just can’t believe it.

“How… *sobbing*… can you just tell me how?”

talkSPORT’s Will Gavin handled the call brilliantly.

“Just remember that the reason that they’re the best team in the league is because you pushed them all the way,” Gavin replied.

Poor Terry.

The good thing for Liverpool fans is that the season isn’t over just yet.

The Champions League final against Tottenham - which they are favourites to win - offers a chance for Klopp to finally win his first trophy as Liverpool manager.

And given the way the league season concluded, there’s likely to be an extra motivation within the players in Madrid.

Oh, and another thing. They finished 31 points ahead of Manchester United.
