The days of the 'friendly derby' between Liverpool and Everton are pretty much over.

There was once a tradition where fans of both clubs would sit together, even individual families split along red and blue lines.

Now, in an atmosphere where emotions are heightened and everything in football feels more extreme, there's no room for those kind of niceties.

Instead, Toffees fans have positively revelled in their rivals' heartache over the weekend.

Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Wolves wasn't enough as Manchester City wrapped up the title with a 4-1 win at Brighton.

All the while, Everton were engaged in a fairly pedestrian 2-2 draw with Tottenham, a game where most of the away end couldn't help but keep glancing at their phones.

When it became clear that the Reds' 29-year wait for a title would continue, the Everton fans erupted.

"We're all having a party when Tottenham win the cup," was sung by both sets of fans in reference to the Champions League final, while in the concourse, Blues fans also chanted:

"You lost the league at Goodison Park" and "Thank you Guardiola from all the Toffeemen".

It's perfectly normal for ordinary fans to have a joke at Liverpool's expense.

We like to think that clubs themselves are above such pettiness. But we were wrong.

A video has emerged which appears to show City anthem 'Blue Moon' being played over the speakers at Goodison Park the day after the champions' triumph.

Everton may have finished eighth. They may have had some difficult moments under Marco Silva.

In fact, there were times this season when they were downright poor.

Yet thanks to City, their fans will look back on the 2018/19 campaign with some very fond memories indeed. The lyrics are quite fitting really:

"Without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own." That probably sums up Everton fan's feelings rather well.

Many spectators have applauded Liverpool's efforts this season - 97 points is a herculean effort after all - but not their neighbours from Merseyside.

Just the way it should be.
