This summer is hugely important for Manchester United.

The Red Devils were insipid in the final weeks of the 2018-19 season, winning just two of their final 12 matches and bowing out with an awful 2-0 defeat at home to relegated Cardiff.

To finish 32 points behind Manchester City is seriously alarming and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, together with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, has plenty of work to do.

There will be a focus on making sure United bring in players with the right work ethic in the summer.

“In my years, the best players have always been the best people,” Solskjaer told MUTV, per Manchester Evening News.

“You have to have that work ethic and we’re scouting the market trying to find the right ones."

BBC Sport reporter David Ornstein has now provided a detailed look into Man United’s plans in the transfer window.

Man United's summer plans

According to Ornstein, the Red Devils are hoping to bring in a mixture of young talent and experienced big names. The focus is on central defence, full-back, central midfield and the wings.

The first-choice centre-back is Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly, whose buy-out clause will reach £130 million in 2021.

Napoli have no need to sell and the 27-year-old’s hefty price is likely to scupper the deal.

At full-back, Man United want to sign Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka - and are ready to rival Manchester City for his signature.

Sancho deal is 'highly unlikely'

Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot is being considered in midfield but much of that will depend on what happens with Paul Pogba.

Man United supporters will be disappointed to hear that their terrible end to the season has had an impact on their chances of signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho was the big signing they were hoping to make, and Old Trafford was the 19-year-old’s preferred destination if he was to return to the UK.

Those involved felt it was nailed on just a couple of months ago. But United’s failure to land Champions League football has put Sancho off.

He is reluctant to give up playing in Europe’s elite competition and if he is to leave, he wants to play for a club that offers stability, progression, development and a chance of winning trophies.

Sancho has doubts that United can offer any of those assurances, and so a deal is looking highly unlikely.

Sancho has drawn interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Real Madrid, but no other Premier League club has been in contact.

Any team hoping to sign the England international will need to pay in excess of £100m, though Sancho isn’t pushing to leave Dortmund.

Ornstein claims it’s 50-50 right now.

Meanwhile, Man United are eyeing Swansea winger Daniel James but a deal is not close.
