Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a revelation for Liverpool over the last two seasons.

The club's defence has played a massive role in their recent challenge for the Premier League title and Alexander-Arnold has been as reliable as they come at right-back.

Playing alongside him is arguably the world's best defender in Virgil van Dijk as well as similar revelations in the form of Andrew Robertson and Joe Gomez.

However, while all of those defenders are worthy of individual praise, Alexander-Arnold is the player that fans hold the dearest.

Not only is the Englishman just 20 years old and a product of the club's academy, but he's a local lad having grown up in the West Derby area of the city.

Alexander-Arnold's superb form

And in spite of his young age, Alexander-Arnold is already approaching 100 appearances for his boyhood club and is considered one of the world's best defenders.

Alexander-Arnold is one of the toughest full-backs to beat in the Premier League, but it's his ability going forward that has particularly stood out this season.

There are few defenders that have the same crossing ability as the Liverpool man and it has created a number of opportunities for the club's front three in recent months.

Alexander-Arnold vs Lingard

As a result, opposite from the similarly creative influence of Robertson, he has been able to wrack up a total of assists that most Premier League midfielders would be proud of.

We're not kidding, either. Alexander-Arnold accumulated 12 assists in the league this season - a tally that only be matched or bettered by Christian Eriksen, Ryan Fraser and Eden Hazard.

However, it's all the more the remarkable when you compare Alexander-Arnold's statistics to Jesse Lingard, who has only managed 10 Premier League assists in his entire career.

That's despite the fact he has made 44 more appearances in the competition, players considerably further up the pitch and has over six years of experience on his compatriot.

It's a pretty embarrassing statistic for Lingard and one that comes after a distinctly disappointing season for the Englishman, in which he produced just two of the assists in question.

It will come as little surprise that Lingard scored more goals, but finding the net on just four occasions was a considerable drop from his tally of 13 last season.

However, flip the statistic on its head and it underlines just how creative Alexander-Arnold is and how many points his passes have won for Liverpool since August.

The fact he has garnered more assists than players like David Silva, Mesut Ozil, Dele Alli and Kevin de Bruyne is testament to his talent at such a young age.

Lingard, on the other hand, needs to improve his performances or slip behind Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in the pecking order.
