Little by little, it looks as though Ajax's young squad is going to be picked apart this summer.

With Frenkie de Jong on his way to Barcelona, the Dutch outfit are also resigned to losing Matthijs De Ligt.

It's hard to believe the skipper is still just 19-years-old.

The kind of leadership he has displayed in his short career so far, together with his defensive prowess, has reportedly attracted the attention of several of Europe's top clubs.

Barca and Manchester City have both been heavily linked to the Dutchman, as have Manchester United.

Then, all of a sudden, rumours of a move to Old Trafford went cold.

Not only will the Red Devils be playing in the Europa League next season after ending the season in crisis, ESPN reported last week that they turned down the chance to sign him a year ago because of concerns over his weight gain.

However, a surprise move could be back on, at least according to a fresh report from The Telegraph.

The newspaper suggest that De Ligt is still open to joining United and they are, in fact, still in the running after all.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring in players with big personalities and the starlet gave a very convincing audition with his public address at Ajax's title-winning parade.

Just a few days ago, the idea of anyone beating Barcelona to his signature would have raised eyebrows.

How quickly things can change in the transfer market, though, as that was before Antoine Griezmann confirmed he would be leaving Atletico Madrid.

The Blaugrana may have to choose between Griezmann and De Ligt due to financial constraints and they did not envisage the latter being so in-demand, so quickly.

It could all come down to the man himself. The Telegraph add that if he does decide against moving to Catalonia, United are among the clubs willing to offer him better personal terms.

United fans would undoubtedly welcome such a statement of intent, even if he isn't going to come cheap.

Who should De Ligt sign for this summer? Have your say in the comments.
