Manchester United fans are probably happy to see the back of the 2018/19 season.

Barring a brief renaissance when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer first arrived, it's been a campaign to forget for the Red Devils and one that hangs a question mark above their immediate future.

United ended the season with a dire run of just two victories in ten games and their performances were reminiscent of the ones Jose Mourinho was so widely criticised for.

It had been hoped that Solskjaer had brought back the attacking brand of football that the club was famous for, before that seemed to evaporate when he was handed a three-year contract.

As a result, it saw United go a second consecutive season without a major honour, prolonging their distinct inability to cope with Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Season to forget for Man Utd

United tepidly bowed out of the Carabao Cup against Derby County, were thrashed by Barcelona in the Champions League and dumped out of the FA Cup by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That's not to mention the implosion of their chase for the top four, eventually finishing in sixth place behind Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Pretty disappointing stuff and it leaves United with a massive summer ahead of them to ensure there are no repercussions.

'First trophy' of the season for United

However, it seems as though the club can take a surprising positive into the 2019-20 season, but it's not one that supporters will be shouting too proudly about.

That's because the club have picked up their 'first trophy' of the year and it comes in the form of the Premier League Grounds Team of the Season.

David Sinclair and his team of groundsmen have been heralded for keeping the Old Trafford pitch in world-class condition throughout the year.

However, perhaps unsurprisingly, the news has been met with ridicule across social media with rival fans joking that it's the only piece of silverware United are capable of winning.

One commenter wrote: "That's the benefit of not playing any football on it."

Another joked: "Tempted to become a Manchester United Groundstaff fan account."

And a third fan penned: "Does this mean they qualify for the Champions League?"

Of course, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes at Premier League clubs to ensure the surface is in perfect condition and it's good that the country's best grounds-teams are rewarded.

That being said, it was somewhat inevitable that such an obscure award - coming in the absence of any major honours - was going to be met with mocking comments.

Well, at least there will be some members of the United staff who can celebrate this summer and it certainly isn't the first-team squad.
