Deontay Wilder reacted very differently to how many supporters might have expected in the aftermath of his first-round knockout of Dominic Breazeale. After a build-up filled with threats and hatred, in which Wilder claimed he would have no sympathy if he were to kill Breazeale, the fight quickly became nasty. Many believed that this animosity might have spilled over during and after the fight and become something quite unsportsmanlike. However, this wasn’t the case at all. Instead Wilder and Breazeale embraced as though they were friends and shared nothing but kind words and a newfound mutual respect for each other. After his impressive display and devastating knockout, Wilder said: “I know there’s been a lot of animosity, hatred and chaos towards each other. There were a lot of words that were said.

“I told him I love him and, of course, I want to see him go home to his family.

“I know we say some things that we mean sometime, but when you get into a fight and settle your differences as men, hold your gloves up… this is what this sport is all about.

“You can come to the next guy and you can hug him and kiss and say thank you so much, instead of other things.

“I wish the world was like that.”

After graciously accepting defeat and the kind words of his opponent in post-fight interview with Showtime, Breazeale was not so forthcoming. Whilst happy to speak to Wilder personally after the fight, he wasn’t so keen on speaking to Showtime and dismissed the post-match interview.

Wilder could also be seen with the WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman who had not been all too happy with the American after his comments about potentially killing his opponent.

But as it always does in any heavyweight division fight, the attention quickly turned to the prospect of the ‘big fights’ with Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.

Wilder had some good news regarding the big three coming together and is convinced that they will happen.

“That fight will happen, the rematch will happen,” said Wilder. “I know a lot of people want to know when the Joshua fight will happen.

“We know that when the big fights happen everything goes silent.

“This fight will happen; the big fights will happen.

“You know what the saying is, good things come to those that wait.”
