As widely predicted, Deontay Wilder comfortably defended his WBC heavyweight title against Dominic Breazeale in New York on Saturday night. Many probably wouldn't have expected the challenger to be knocked out cold mid-way through the first round though, and Lennox Lewis has publicly criticised Breazeale for the manner of the defeat.Considering the 33-year-old was a mandatory challenger, the brutal nature of Wilder's victory sent shockwaves through the boxing universe and extended the 'Bronze Bomber's' flawless professional record to 42 fights, 41 wins, 40 KOs, no defeats. With that in mind, fans of the sport won't believe he's been fully tested yet, despite dodging a bullet against Tyson Fury in December. It took just 137 seconds to floor Breazeale and emphatically retain his gold at the Barclays Center, and British boxing great Lewis made sure to make his thoughts on the bout very clear on social media afterwards.

“It didn’t seem like Breazele brought much to the table tonite. Dunno what he was doing w/ the left hook & u also don’t wait on a puncher. u get out on him from the start. Wilder once again showed his devastating power but probably won’t learn much from this one.”

You can't really fault anything Lewis is saying. Breazeale was clearly not a worthy opponent for Wilder on a night where the champion was forced to put in a minimal amount of work. The fight everyone wants to see Wilder involved in is obvious, and this wasn't it.

Sincere respect was shown by Wilder to his American compatriot following the bout though, and he made it crystal clear that he wanted Breazeale to "go home to his family." This comes after he stated "boxing is the only sport where you can kill a man and get away with it" prior to fight night.

Wilder was heavily criticised for how he acted in the build-up, but it was good to see a show of respect that was evidently mutual after all the mind games were done. As for what's next for the undisputed champion... Joshua? Fury rematch? It's anyone's guess.
