Real Madrid's disastrous season came to an end with one more calamity, this time in the shape of a 2-0 home defat to Real Betis. Second-half goals from Loren Moron and Jese were reason enough for a volatile Bernabeu crowd to boo their team off at full-time. The atmosphere was as sour as ever. When Gareth Bale looks back, he might even be thankful that Zinedine Zidane did not afford him a single minute of playing time on what would have almost certainly been his final appearance. It's been a campaign that has seen two managers come and go - first Julen Lopetegui, and latterly Santiago Solari - and serious questions remain about Zidane. Although it seemed unthinkable when he returned, there are even rumours that Zizou may not last the summer.

So who exactly is to blame? Marcelo insists the players must shoulder the responsibility, but Florentino Perez will take his fair share of flak for his transfer policy.

Cristiano Ronaldo's departure for Juventus left a gaping hole in Los Blancos' attack, one which has not been filled.

The Portuguese enjoyed a successful debut campaign in Italy, winning the title with the Old Lady and scoring 27 goals and assisting a further 10 in all competitions.

Compare that to Mariano, who scored four all season, the same tally as promising attacking midfielder Vinicius Jr. who has shown glimpses of his talent but who couldn't be expected to fill Ronaldo's shoes yet.

At least it's been a positive season for Karim Benzema.

However, while the Frenchman has found the back of the net on 30 occasions, it's been all too clear that Real have been missing his former partner in attack.

To highlight that, the following stat has been doing the rounds:

In the 2017/18 season, which proved to be the 34-year-old's last in the Spanish capital, he contributed to a total of 31 goals - 26 scored by himself, five assisted. Real ultimately scored 94.

This time around, Zidane's men managed just 63 - exactly 31 fewer. It's fair to say it's no coincidence.

No wonder they finished an alarming 19 points off champions Barcelona.

At the other end of the pitch, things weren't much better either, with Madrid shipping 17 goals more than second-placed Atletico.

Perez's decision to ditch Real's 'galactico' policy proved disastrous. There really is just no replacing a player like Ronaldo.
