Manchester United need to make serious squad imporvements if they want to challenge for trophies next season. 2018/19 was a campaign of chaos and disappointment for the Red Devils. Jose Mourinho began the season in charge but was replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December. After a honeymoon period that saw United go unbeaten for 11 games under their caretaker boss, it seems things have gone back to square one with a shocking run of form to end the campaign. Maybe then, Mourinho wasn't the problem. It's clear that some of the current squad just aren't fit to wear the famous shirt and new players need to be brought in.

And Ed Woodward apparently wants to start by signing a new centre back - because on Monday, United made a bid for Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly.

Per Nicolo Schira, a journalist for La Gazzetta dello Sport, the offer was €110 million (£96.55m) - which the Italian side have rejected.

"Napoli have rejected a Manchester United bid (€110M) for Kalidou #Koulibaly. De Laurentiis doesn’t [want to] sell him and the termination clause (€150M) will be valid only from 2020," he tweeted.

With Koulibaly's buy-out clause only valid from next year, it seems that United will have to pay an awful lot of money to secure his signature this summer.

But, they would be getting a brilliant player and the 27-year-old proved his class again at the weekend by making a spectacular goal-line clearance against Inter Milan.

Check it out below.

That header alone could easily add another £20 million onto Koulibaly's already high transfer fee.

But, it's hard to blame Napoli for demanding over £100 million for their star centre back, especially after he was named Serie A Defender of the Year on Sunday.

If Woodward wants his man, he's going to have to step up his offer.
