Manchester United have had a season to forget.

It seems like a lifetime ago that Jose Mourinho was in charge at Old Trafford - but he started the 2018/19 campaign in the dugout.

After a poor run of form, he was axed in December and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took the hot seat.

United went unbeaten in his first 11 matches, which prompted the club to offer the Norwegian a permanent contract.

But since Solskjaer accepted the full-time role, things have gone downhill and the Red Devils had to settle for sixth, with no trophies come May.

Although they finished nowhere near the top of the Premier League, United have topped one table - as they picked up more injuries than any other club in the top flight last season.

According to data from Premier Injuries, Solskjaer's squad suffered 61 separate injuries between August 10, 2018, and May 12, 2019.

That's far more than any other team in the league, with Tottenham (42), Liverpool (37), Huddersfield (36), Newcastle (36) and Arsenal (35) rounding off the six teams with the most injured stars.

It gets even worse for United, as the data shows their players were sidelined for a combined total of 1,392 days - which is again more than any other club.

Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial had the worst luck, suffering five separate injuries each, while striker Romelu Lukaku had a total of three layoffs himself.

With so many injury problems throughout the campaign, it's hardly surprising that United could only manage to finish sixth.

Although, even with 42 injuries and players being out for a total of 1,140 days, Spurs still managed to finish second in the Premier League and reach the Champions League final.

So, Solskjaer can't completely blame his side's poor performances on these issues.

Check out the table below, which breaks down all the injuries that each Premier League team suffered last season.

With a total of 608 injuries in 2018/19, the English top flight really did live up to its reputation of being the toughest and most competitive in Europe.
