It's now been 11 years since one of the most famous matches in football history.Ahead of the second all-England Champions League final in less than two week's time, it's fitting that we can now look back on Manchester United and Chelsea's own domestic dust-up.That fateful evening in Moscow is the only other time that two English teams have met in the final of Europe's premier competition and it was certainly a game for the ages.It pitted a United side that were fresh from winning the Premier League title against a plucky Chelsea team that continued to thrive despite Jose Mourinho's departure earlier in the season.Footage of that rain-sodden match in the Russian capital continues to be played all these years later, even if Chelsea fans won't thank the footballing world for looking back.

2008 Champions League final

It was United who opened the scoring on that night with Cristiano Ronaldo - who had just won his first European Golden Shoe - producing a trademark header to find the bottom corner.

However, the Chelsea response came at a pivotal moment of the game; Frank Lampard drawing the scores level by prodding home just before half-time.

The final devolved into a tense affair from then on in, eventually trundling towards a penalty shootout with Didier Drogba dismissed for slapping Nemanja Vidic along the way.

Remembering Moscow 2008

It was the ninth time that a Champions League final had gone to penalties and it looked as though Chelsea would come out victorious after Ronaldo saw his effort saved by Petr Cech.

Nevertheless, in one of the most memorable moments in sporting history, John Terry missed the chance to win it for Chelsea; slipped at the crucial moment and struck his penalty wide.

The shootout would eventually progress to a sudden death competition, with Nicolas Anelka seeing his strike saved by Edwin van der Sar and handing United the trophy in the process.

Along with victories in 1968 and 1999, it marked a third European victory for United and many of the alumni from the day have marked the anniversary. Check out the best tweets here:

What a day for United and what an evening to forget for the Blues.

The spectre of Moscow would hang over Terry for the next half-decade and the Chelsea captain would openly admit that he struggled to come to terms with the defeat.

They would have to wait until 2012 to get their reprieve, famously winning against Bayern Munich in another shootout, although Terry didn't have the pressure of stepping up once again.

For United, though, it was an evening to remember and would mark the final time that Ferguson conquered Europe with the club suffering defeat in the following season's climax.

It was also the crowning moment of a particular period of dominance for United, who would go on  to retain the Premier League title in 2008-09, making it three domestic triumphs on the bounce.

However, even if we forget all the context surrounding it, that one night in Moscow will live long in the memories of football fans and - of course - Terry himself.
