Vasyl Lomachenko has retained his status as the world's best pound-for-pound boxer in the latest rankings published by The Ring Magazine. The current WBA (Super), WBO and Ring lightweight champion has held top spot since September 2018 and defeated Anthony Crolla in his most recent bout last month to update his record to 13 wins from 14 fights.Lomachenko highlighted his case for holding onto the number one spot when CompuBox stats showed that he landed 29% (72/249) of his shots, whilst Crolla, who was unable to participate in the post-match interviews, managed just 13% (12/96).Even more impressively, the 31-year-old managed 58 power shots compared to Crolla’s 7.Undefeated WBO Welterweight champion Terence Crawford took second following a technical knockout victory against Amir Khan on April 20.

Canelo Alvarez was ranked third to commemorate a month in which he added the IBF middleweight title to his WBA (Super), WBC, The Ring and lineal middleweight titles by beating Daniel Jacobs.

Japanese bantamweight fighter Naoya Inoue came in fourth, whilst former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, whose planned heavyweight debut against Carlos Takam was recently cancelled, was fifth.

Further down the list, Errol Spence Jr was rated sixth best, whilst previous #1 Gennady Golovkin, who held the title for just under a year, slipped to seventh.

Juan Estrada, Mikey Garcia and Donnie Nietes rounded out the top 10.

True to form, the updated rankings provoked debate and disagreements amongst boxing fans, with some suggesting on Twitter that Crawford’s runner-up spot was generous, and others arguing that Golovkin did not deserve a top 10 position as he hasn’t fought in nine months.

Some suggested that a case could be made to put the top five in any given order.

Lomachenko’s next fight will be in September, although his opponent is yet to be announced.

The opportunity to take on the world’s supposed best pound-for-pound fighter will no doubt be enticing to many.
