Just three weeks after suffering a heart attack while training with his team, FC Porto, Iker Casillas’s wife Sara Carbonero has revealed the devastating news that she’s fighting ovarian cancer.
The 35-year-old TV sports journalist made the shock announcement on Tuesday.
Carbonero and Casillas have been in a relationship since 2009 and were married seven years later, in March 2016.
“When we hadn’t yet recovered from one shock, life has surprised us again,” she wrote in an emotional post on social media, per the Mirror. “This time it’s me, that six-letter word I still struggle to write.
“A few days ago during a check-up, doctors described a malignant ovarian tumour and I have been operated on.”

Carbonero added that the cancer was caught “in time” but that she has months of treatment ahead of her.
“Everything has turned out okay and fortunately we caught it in time but I’ve still got some months left fighting while I have the corresponding treatment,” she continued.
“I’m calm and confident everything is going to be okay. I know the road will be tough but will also have a happy ending.
“I have the support of my family and friend and a great medical team.
“I take advantage of this moment to ask that my journalist colleagues show the respect and understanding they have always shown me, especially in these difficult and delicate times for me and my family.”
Carbonero, who has two sons with Casillas, helped organise her husband’s 38th birthday on Monday before breaking the news about her own health battle.
Casillas was expected to call time on his illustrious playing career following his recent heart attack, although he is yet to announce this.
The 38-year-old recently declared on social media: "Retire, there will be a day I have to retire. Let me announce the news when that time comes. For now, quiet.
"Yesterday I had a review with Dr. Filipe Macedo. All very well. That's really great news I wanted to share with everyone!"
For now, though, all of his focus will be on helping his wife with her recovery.
