Dustin Johnson has deservedly earned his fair share of plaudits for some very impressive form so far this year.As well as picking up wins on the PGA and European Tours, he finished second at the PGA Championship on Sunday to add to his joint second finish at The Masters in April. However, Brooks Koepka taking home the trophy by two shots meant that Johnson completed a unique and arguably unwanted achievement; he is now the latest player to have been a runner-up at all four golf majors. The feat has been jokingly referred to as the ‘runner-up Grand Slam’ and Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio took the opportunity to ask Johnson how it felt to own the title. To the laughter of interviewer John Maginnes, Johnson sarcastically responded, “Yay, I’m so excited”.Johnson entered the concluding day of this weekend’s tournament seven shots behind the lead, but was unable to capitalise on Koepka’s final round of 74 to pull off a shock victory. His latest runner-up finish joins those at The Open behind Darren Clarke in 2011 and US Open behind Jordan Spieth in 2015.Tiger Woods’ epic comeback was his scourge at this year’s Masters as he had to settle for joint second with Koepka and Xander Schauffele.

Johnson isn’t the first golfer to acknowledge his penchant for narrowly missing out; when Louis Oosthuizen earned his own runner-up Grand Slam at the PGA Championship in 2017, he famously took to Twitter to post a video of him lip-syncing Andra Day’s song Rise Up.

Many have applauded Johnson for responding to his succession of nearly moments in a tongue-in-cheek manner, with one Twitter user suggesting that his second-place finishes demonstrate his “consistently great form”.

Johnson’s attention will now be focused on this year’s US Open – suitably, the one major he did manage to win back in 2016.
