Memories have to be cast back to 1964 to recall the last time Arsenal tasted European glory, coming out on top in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

That could all change next month though as they take on London rivals Chelsea in an all-English Europa League final in Baku.

However, the occasion has been marked by severe controversy as the Gunners will be without midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

It was confirmed on Monday that the 30-year-old will not be travelling with the squad due to security worries amidst the political disputes between Azerbaijan and his nation Armenia.

And it’s safe to say, Arsenal are fuming.

In fact, managing director Vinai Venkatesham said via the Financial Times Business that the club will write to UEFA to complain about how this has been allowed to happen, saying: “I struggle to find words for how strongly I feel. We feel it's unacceptable.

“We don't feel he can travel and it's extraordinarily sad. You don't get a chance to play in major European finals often.

“Miki has had it taken away from him and it is an extraordinary shame.

“We made our point clearly to UEFA, we have written to them.

“We will also sit down with them face to face after the final and express how it is unacceptable and how it can never happen again to Arsenal or anyone.”

The Gunners’ number seven is no stranger to Europa League success either having won the tournament with Manchester United in 2017.

And UEFA did have a security plan in place for the winger, with their statement reading: “UEFA sought and received assurances regarding the player's safety in Azerbaijan from the highest authorities in the country.

“As a result of these guarantees, a comprehensive security plan was developed and given to the club.”

However, Both Arsenal and Mkhitaryan agreed against it.

It joins the pile of controversy surrounding the upcoming final as both sides have only been allocated 6000 tickets in a 68,000-seater stadium, not to mention the hefty flight prices to get there.
