Manchester United chiefs have reportedly given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a £300m budget to transform their squad in this summer's transfer window.

A world-class centre-back is desperately needed following a season where the Red Devils conceded 54 goals in the Premier League - more than the rest of the top six.

United need better wide options, too, which is why they were being linked with a big-money move for Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho back in March.

According to numerous reports at the time, United were prepared to break their transfer record with a £100m bid for the 19-year-old.

However, not even a week into the Premier League transfer window and they appear to have given up the chase.

ESPN's Mark Ogden claims United have performed a u-turn and decided against signing Sancho because Dortmund are demanding £80-90m.

The 20-time league champions now deem Dortmund's valuation as "overinflated" considering the player only has two full seasons at senior level under his belt.

Solskjaer will now look elsewhere, although it's also noted that United are still interested in signing Sancho in the future.

Not the most promising of starts, but perhaps understandable.
