Every top team across Europe has a select group of players that they struggle to function without.

If you look at the success of Liverpool in 2018/19, a lot that was down to the spine of Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

That trio were allowed to play near enough every key game for the club and it paid dividends for Jurgen Klopp.

The same goes for Barcelona, although they're more reliant one man, Lionel Messi, than a trio.

All of the elite have their 'Mr. Indispensables' and ESPN have given their opinion on which player is the most important for each of Europe's top 12 teams.

No surprise to see Messi for Barcelona and Van Dijk for Liverpool, but some other selections will certainly spark debate.

THE NOMINATED DOZEN

Barcelona - Lionel Messi

Liverpool - Virgil van Dijk

Manchester City - Fernandinho

Juventus - Joao Cancelo

Real Madrid - Casemiro

Manchester United - Paul Pogba

Tottenham - Christian Eriksen

Atletico Madrid - Jan Oblak

Chelsea - Eden Hazard

Paris Saint-Germain - Kylian Mbappe

Arsenal - Aaron Ramsey

Bayern Munich - Thiago

The one selection that stands out is Cancelo, with Cristiano Ronaldo omitted from the list.

But Cancelo's impact has been impressive. In his 18 Serie A games, Juve won 14 and drew four and guess where he was during the 2-1 loss to Ajax? On the bench.

The rest of the nominations look pretty solid, although Los Blancos fans may not universally agree on Casemiro.

Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema or Dani Carvajal could perhaps have been included instead.

Ramsey featuring for Arsenal is pretty sad, with the Welshman leaving the club for Juventus this summer.

However, at least the Gunners have both Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to help fill the 'Mr. Indispensable' void left by Ramsey.
