Ajax took the footballing world by storm this season, winning the Eredivisie title while falling agonisingly short of the UEFA Champions League final.Lead by their inspirational teenage captain Matthijs de Ligt, the Dutch side knocked reigning champions Real Madrid out of Europe, before sending Italian giants Juventus packing. On both occasions, Ajax were overwhelming underdogs but played some absolutely scintillating football to blow their much-fancied opponents away.Unfortunately, their dream run would end in heartbreak as Tottenham roared back to steal the semi-final with the very last kick of the game. The side from Amsterdam were only seconds away from a date with Liverpool in Madrid but it wasn’t meant to be in the end.

Nonetheless, it has been an extraordinary season at the Amsterdam Arena and the Dutch title proved quite a tonic for their European heartache.

They gelled superbly as a team and their spirit shone through as they captured the hearts of footballs fans worldwide.

Now, the club has honoured this remarkable group with a beautiful video titled ‘The Class of 2019’.

Lovely, lovely stuff.

Ajax truly were a breath of fresh air this season and a joy to watch.

Sadly, this incredible team is set to be torn up this summer with Europe’s superpowers circling their best young stars.

Frenkie De Jong has already signed for Spanish giants Barcelona with de Ligt looking increasingly likely to join him.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is attracting plenty of interest while Hakim Ziyech also looks to be heading for the exit door.

Finally, winger David Neres could also be plying his trade elsewhere after reported interest from Liverpool.

Wherever they may find themselves in the coming years though, these players will always remember this special season and the history they created.

Here’s to the class of 2019 - what a team they were.
