Paris Saint-Germain’s 2018/19 campaign ended, rather fittingly, on a sour note on Friday evening.Thomas Tuchel’s side suffered a 3-1 loss away at Reims - their fifth Ligue 1 defeat of the season.Although PSG wrapped up the league title several weeks ago, this has not been a particularly good season for the French outfit. They lost the Coupe de la Ligue to Guingamp back in January and were beaten by Rennes in the Coupe de France final in April.Worst of all, though, was their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League last 16.

PSG had beaten United 2-0 at Old Trafford three weeks earlier and were the firm favourites to book their place in the quarter-finals ahead of the second leg in Paris.

However, Marcus Rashford’s dramatic late penalty sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side through to face Barcelona. It was a crushing blow for the Parisian outfit, whose owners have invested millions in recent years to ensure the club become champions of Europe sooner rather than later.

Tuchel admitted after the Reims game that he’s worried about his future with PSG, but he’s not the only person who should be.

Gianluigi Buffon is unquestionably a legend of the game, one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, but he was poor at the Stade Auguste-Delaune II on Friday night.

The Italian icon, who turns 42 next season, endured a disastrous evening and PSG’s owners will surely be asking themselves whether it’s in the club’s best interests to keep him beyond this summer.

He was nutmegged from an acute angle for Reims’ first goal.

He then got a weak hand to Mathieu Cafaro’s effort in the second half.

And he was caught out badly in the final minute of stoppage-time and looked his age as he tried to get to ground in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent Pablo Chavarria from making it 3-1 to the home side.

Following this performance - which could end up being his last for PSG - many football fans on social media are now urging Buffon to bring an end to his illustrious playing career.

With Alphonse Areola and Kevin Trapp already at PSG, plus the potential arrival of David de Gea from Manchester United, it’s beginning to look as if Buffon’s days at the Parc des Princes might be numbered.

If he opts to prolong his career for another season then good luck to him. He deserves to decide when to retire.

But it would be a crying shame if the final years of his career are remembered for the wrong reasons.
