Never mind a cabinet, Lionel Messi must have an entire room in his house for all of his awards. The Barcelona forward, widely regarded as the greatest footballer of all time in the eyes of many, has won countless team and individual accolades since making his professional debut in 2004.His latest award is the European Golden Shoe, which he secured on Friday night after Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe only managed to score one goal against Reims. The Frenchman needed four on the night to equal Messi’s 36-goal tally for the season.Messi has now won the Golden Shoe six times. This, needless to say, is a record.Cristiano Ronaldo is second on the list with four Golden Shoe awards to his name, with his most-recent success coming during the 2014/15 season with Real Madrid.

It was in 2015 that Ronaldo made some eyebrow-raising comments about the individual accolade to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

He was trailing Messi at the time in terms of number of Ballon d’Or awards won, but he was 4-3 up for number of Golden Shoe awards secured.

And he claimed that, in his opinion, the Golden Shoe was better than the Ballon d’Or.

"The competition for the Golden Shoe also comes from other leagues," the Portuguese superstar was quoted as saying by Goal.

"There are some fantastic strikers around in England and Germany. There are Wayne Rooney and Aguero in the Premier League and obviously Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga.

"But don't forget Karim Benzema here at Real Madrid and Luis Suarez at Barcelona. Benzema is playing very well this season and Suarez has already won the trophy once while at Liverpool.

"I really love this award. It is the best award out there for me. Others can pick you as the best player, but an attacker's job is to make goals and I love that. I cannot deny that I love scoring goals."

Wonder if he still feels the same now that Messi has taken a 6-4 lead?

Bit awkward.

Ronaldo’s four-year-old quote has been re-shared by Messi fans on Twitter since the Argentine’s latest award was confirmed on Friday.

Messi and Ronaldo are currently equal on five Ballon d’Or awards each, although the former is the bookmakers’ favourite to win football’s most prestigious individual accolade for a record-breaking sixth time later this year.
